*Barron’s Penta Best 100 Hedge Funds list ranks investment programs based on annualized three-year compound performance. Research begins with information provided by three major hedge fund databases: BarclayHedge, Morningstar, and Preqin. They also rely on industry contacts and other sources they deem reliable to report on firms that don’t file with the databases. Funds must have at least $300 million in assets and a minimum 3-year track record as of the prior ending calendar year. The list screens out narrow industries and small regions, excludes funds that invest in only one sector or country, and avoids commodity-focused funds. Gold or energy funds are omitted, but diversified commodity trading advisors, i.e., diversified managed futures, are considered.
